Wellness Recovery Action Plan for Veterans, Active Service Members, and Military in Transition

Wellness Recovery Action Plan for Veterans, Active Service Members, and Military in Transition is an adaptation of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and an update of the 2007 book, WRAP for Veterans and People in the Military. WRAP for Veterans, Active Service Members, and Military in Transition has been revised and rewritten to address the major issues experienced by today’s Veterans and service members, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), substance use, trauma, homelessness, and suicide.

  • A new foreword from a U.S. Army Veteran and Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator
  • A revised introduction with important framing information about how Veterans and people on active duty in the military can use WRAP
  • Real-life stories from Veterans and active military personnel in every chapter, including women Veterans and people of color
  • A section about transitioning to civilian life after military service
  • An appendix with additional resources for Veterans
  • Enhanced design and layout

Veterans and service members using WRAP have reported experiencing better overall physical and mental health, reduced substance use, better pain management, improved sleep, and lower levels of stress, among other benefits. As an evidence-based practice, WRAP peer-group intervention has been shown to increase hopefulness, improve quality of life, increase people's ability to self-advocate, increase feelings of empowerment, reduce the need to use healthcare services over time, and improve recovery outcomes.

WRAP for Addictions: Finding Freedom from Unwanted Patterns

WRAP for Addictions: Finding Freedom from Unwanted Patterns is an adaptation of the flagship WRAP: Wellness Recovery Action Plan designed specifically for adults and older teens who want to gain control over powerful urges and unwanted, compulsive behavior patterns such as drug or alcohol use, gambling, sex, eating disorders, self-injury, gaming, pornography, lying, and more. This edition of WRAP for Addictions: Finding Freedom from Unwanted Patterns is the first major revision to this book since the 2012 update of the original WRAP for Addictions.

WRAP for Addictions presents a proven method based on the evidence-based WRAP program to support individuals to improve the quality of their lives by incorporating wellness strategies into daily life—both in general and specifically around reducing or eliminating unwanted, compulsive behavior patterns. WRAP for Addictions is a personalized approach to addressing addictions in which each person decides for themself what “wellness” and “recovery” look like. As stated in the introduction:

WRAP doesn’t tell you what to do. The goal of WRAP is to build a toolkit of things that work for you. The WRAP process invites you to think about what you want in your life and decide how to make it happen. It provides practical steps and concepts, as well as ongoing recovery management tools, to help you follow your plan and achieve your goals.

Abstinence is not required in WRAP. The WRAP program supports you to define your wellness in your way. You are not required to abstain from substances or behaviors to be able to use WRAP. In fact, there are no “readiness” requirements for the WRAP program at all. If you want to use WRAP, that means you’re ready. In this book, when we talk about “staying clean,” we use that term to mean following through with whatever level of use or engagement works for you—not necessarily abstinence. It’s up to each of us to determine what recovery looks like in our own lives. You can use whatever term and whatever guidelines you feel comfortable with.

If you choose to use WRAP, this book can help you:

  • Decrease and prevent unwanted or troubling feelings and behaviors
  • Increase the sense of personal choice you have about how you live your life
  • Improve your quality of life
  • Help you achieve your life goals and dreams

With WRAP, you can:

  • Discover your own simple, safe wellness tools
  • Develop a daily plan to help you stay as well as possible
  • Identify upsetting events or circumstances and develop action plans for responding to them without using substances or engaging in other unwanted behaviors
  • Create a strategy to gain support and stay in control of your wellness during and after a crisis

WRAP for Addictions is a foundational book for any WRAP program. Use it on your own or with an evidence-based WRAP group focused on general wellness or addictions. Like all other WRAP materials, WRAP for Addictions is compatible with other health and wellness strategies, supports, and treatment programs, including 12-step programs.

Who this Item is for

This book is specifically designed to support wellness for those who are actively dealing with or in recovery from addiction. It was written with guidance from individuals who have experienced all types of addiction and used WRAP to help support the recovery process, stay well, and rebuild their lives. This may have involved:

  • Recovering from a drug, alcohol, gambling, nicotine, self-injury, or other addiction
  • Finding and living in decent, safe housing
  • Getting a good job and having steady employment
  • Finding job training opportunities
  • Going back to school
  • Healing relationships with children, family, and friends
  • Addressing and paying off financial debts
  • Going to a counselor
  • Seeking mental health or substance use treatment
  • Learning to use community resources that support recovery
  • Seeing a doctor or dentist for regular check-ups or concerns
  • Meeting new people and trying new activities

If you have struggled with addiction or unwanted patterns or are currently in that struggle, you are not alone. Sometimes, though, the journey can feel lonely. Family members and friends who don’t understand may not know how to respond or provide support. They may be dealing with their own addiction or other challenges that put a wedge in relationships. This can be discouraging. But WRAP has helped many find hope even when things are tough. We invite you to try out the WRAP process and experience that hope and empowerment for yourself.

Special Features

  • Expanded focus to include all types of addictions, not just drugs or alcohol
  • A new foreword from an Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator and director of an International WRAP Center of Excellence
  • Real-life stories of addiction and recovery from people of all ages from all walks of life dealing with a variety of behavior patterns including substance use, gaming, gambling, and more
  • New content on options for reducing infection risk and overdose risk related to substance use
  • Enhanced layout and design, with more space for notes and doodling

WRAP for the Effects of Trauma

Trauma occurs when any circumstance or experience overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. The experience of trauma can have a lasting impact on mental health, physical health, or both, and what many deem “symptoms” are normal reactions to abnormal circumstances we have experienced. Based on the flagship WRAP: Wellness Recovery Action Plan, the adaptation, , asks individuals seeking wellness not “What’s wrong with you?” but rather “What happened?” and “What do you need?” WRAP for the Effects of Trauma includes information specific to the experience of being a trauma survivor, examples of signs of distress that may be trauma-related, and lots of ideas for Wellness Tools and action plans that work for people who have experienced trauma.

It can be your personal guide to recovery and wellness, whether you are developing your WRAP in a group, working with a supporter to develop your WRAP, or are developing your WRAP on your own. Like the WRAP Red Book, it contains comprehensive instructions for developing your WRAP and in-depth descriptions of some of the most common Wellness Tools. In addition, it contains lots of information and examples that are specific to addressing trauma-related issues, with information from people like yourself who are working on their wellness and recovery. This book will help you:

  • Discover your own simple, safe Wellness Tools
  • Develop a daily plan to help you stay as well as possible
  • Identify upsetting events or circumstances and develop action plans for responding to them
  • Create a strategy to gain support and stay in control of your wellness during and after a crisis

Whether you are working on your WRAP individually or in an evidence-based WRAP peer group, it can be your personal guide to recovery and wellness. This special edition is specifically designed to support individuals who have experienced trauma who are seeking to achieve wellness and recovery. Agencies and organizations often purchase this well-known book for distribution to people working with a care provider or for those working in evidence-based WRAP groups.

A WRAP Workbook for Kids

With the help of three great kids, Hawk, Esther, and Akincana, this delightful book will guide children ages 7 to 12 through the process of developing their own Wellness Recovery Action Plan. It will help them discover all the things they can do to feel well, stay well, and feel better when the going is hard. It starts with listing all those good and fun things that they can use to develop their action plans, like running with the dog, coloring, and talking to a friend. Using these tools, the book guides them through the process of listing:
  • What they need to do every day to stay healthy and well
  • Things that might upset them and what they can do if these things happen
  • Signs that they are not feeling well and things they can do to help themselves feel better
  • Signs that things are going badly and things that they can do to make the situation better
As children work on these plans, it helps to have supportive parents, teachers, and other adults who provide encouragement and praise as they grow, change, make good decisions, and take positive action on their own behalf. Developing a WRAP is creative, fun, and life-changing for everyone involved.

Community Links: Pathways to Reconnection and Recovery

Community Links is a voluntary program that matches peers or community members with people who have court orders of non-hospitalization or involuntary commitment, are dependent on the mental health system for assistance and support, and/or feel isolated from their community due to mental health difficulties.

These peers or community members have been trained to assist and support others in developing positive reciprocal relationships, regaining their independence, integrating themselves in their community, and improving the overall quality of their lives. The Community Links relationship diminishes over time as the person develops natural supports and becomes more comfortable in the community.

This program is based on the findings of the Moving Ahead Research Project (Shery Mead and Mary Ellen Copeland, PhD, co-principal investigators, Vermont Real Choices Grant, 2004). In this qualitative research project, the researchers interviewed 28 people who were on orders of non-hospitalization or involuntary commitment. They found that people want to end their dependency on the mental health system, become more fully integrated into the community of their choice, develop the skills and strategies needed for independence, and work toward meeting their own life dreams and goals.

Who this Item is for

The Community Links manual is designed for mental health agencies and organizations to use for developing and administering a Community Links Program. If you are an agency or organization working to assist people in their recovery and promote community integration, this manual is for you.

Living WRAP DVD

WRAP: Wellness Recovery Action Plan author Mary Ellen Copeland, PhD, presents a wealth of information on wellness and recovery through snippets of her everyday life in this two-part DVD. Learn about diet as Mary Ellen shops with her daughter and prepares a meal with her mother; exercise, as she whirs away on her bike; light, as she shows us her workspace and her light box; and the importance of support groups as she facilitates one. Mary Ellen, along with her colleagues, discusses medication, stress, and the importance of self-advocacy.

In Part 1 of Living WRAP, Mary Ellen Copeland takes us step by step through the key concepts of recovery and WRAP. As we watch her facilitate an actual WRAP group, we are also treated to a highly personal glimpse into her private life as she shares and shows us some of her diverse Wellness Tools.

Part 2 of Living WRAP contains historic footage from Coping with Depression, the original video that was produced and directed by William Hood in 1991, about six years before WRAP was born. Here, a younger Mary Ellen Copeland tells the story of her past through family photos and demonstrates her journey from a life of mental health challenges to a life of wellness and recovery. In this compelling and intimate video, you’ll see the progression of the work that led to WRAP as we know it today.

Who this Item is for

If you’ve ever wondered what wellness looks like day to day, or if you’re curious about the origins of WRAP, this DVD is for you.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan for Reentry: Moving Forward from Incarceration

Wellness Recovery Action Plan for Reentry: Moving Forward from Incarceration is an adaptation of Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) designed specifically to support those who are currently incarcerated, who have previously been incarcerated, or who have had other contact with the criminal justice system. WRAP has long been used by individuals who have had justice-system involvement to create a life that is not defined by the things that happened on their worst day.

This brand-new book was written with contributions and personal stories from those who have lived WRAP behind walls and back in the community. Its purpose is to support justice-involved individuals to perform at their optimum and achieve success in their efforts towards mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness pre- and post-release, both during incarceration and as returning citizens.

Says one member of the WRAP community:

“I will never forget the sound of that wall closing behind me the first time I went to jail. In that moment, it was instant panic, instant fear. …[My peers] told me, ‘Real men don’t do programs.’ But programs are what changed my life. WRAP gave me a structure to support me in anything I want to do. …Now I get to give back to those that are incarcerated. I go back into the correctional facilities where I was once an inmate and offer others the opportunity to learn to respond to life’s challenges instead of reacting negatively to things. For the past 15 years, I have had the honor and privilege of mentoring other men pre- and post-release and supporting them through this thing we call life. WRAP shows us how to create these action plans that, if we use them, help us break through the barriers that used to hold us down. It gives us the freedom to continue moving forward in creating a life without regret.”

WRAP for Reentry presents a proven process to help individuals improve the quality of their lives by incorporating wellness strategies into daily life both during and after incarceration. This book features:

  • A foreword sharing the numerous wellness connections that emerged when one state department of corrections introduced WRAP into its program
  • Real-life stories from individuals who have experienced incarceration or other legal issues and have used WRAP to leave the past behind them
  • A special chapter about transitioning to life in the community after incarceration
  • Enhanced design and layout

Individuals using WRAP during and after incarceration have reported experiencing better overall physical and mental health, reduced substance use, better pain management, improved sleep, lower levels of stress, and lower rates of recidivism, rearrest, or repeat incarceration, among other benefits. Even individuals serving life sentences have reported positive outcomes from using WRAP. As an evidence-based practice, WRAP peer-group intervention has been shown to increase hopefulness, improve quality of life, increase people’s ability to self-advocate, increase feelings of empowerment, reduce the need to use healthcare services over time, and improve recovery outcomes.

WRAP for Reentry applies WRAP’s proven principles and practices to challenges and situations unique to individuals now facing or who have previously faced incarceration. With WRAP for Reentry, you can:

  • Discover your own simple, safe wellness tools that you can use behind walls or once your incarceration is over
  • Develop a daily plan to help you stay as well as possible through whatever life throws at you
  • Identify challenging events or circumstances and develop action plans for responding to them
  • Create a strategy to gain support and stay in control of your health and wellness amid often-changing circumstances and limited choices
  • "Get out and stay out” with a personalized plan to prevent future incarceration

Who this Item is for

If you’re currently serving time, have previously been incarcerated, or are dealing with related challenges, WRAP for Reentry is for you. It’s also for those who love and support someone living behind walls or building a new life after incarceration or other involvement with the criminal justice system.

WRAP can help you improve your wellness and feel empowered in any of these areas:

  • Physical health conditions, including illness and injury
  • Lifestyle issues, such as sleep and pain management
  • Family separation and reunification challenges
  • Adjustments related to living through incarceration or managing life after incarceration
  • Mental health challenges
  • Substance use and addiction

WRAP is used by people in all kinds of circumstances and by healthcare and mental health systems all over the world. Agencies and organizations often purchase WRAP materials for distribution to individuals working with a care provider or for those working in evidence-based WRAP groups.

Please note: This book is not a guide to facilitating WRAP groups; certified WRAP Facilitators use the Facilitator Training Manual to lead groups.

Special Features

  • Incarceration and reentry–focused content, including the special chapter “Getting Out and Staying Out—Using WRAP to Prevent Future Incarceration”
  • For use individually or in conjunction with an evidence-based WRAP group inside correctional facilities or in the community
  • Emphasizes safe, simple tools and strategies anyone can use to achieve wellness
  • Compatible with other health and wellness strategies, supports, and treatment programs, including 12-step programs, forensic peer support, and other tools
  • New design with more space for notes and doodling

WRAP for Veterans, Active Service Members, and Military in Transition presents a proven process to help individuals improve the quality of their lives by incorporating wellness strategies into daily life both during and after military service. This book features:

Who this Item is for

Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual

Chronic pain is a world unto itself. The simple things in life are no longer simple. Pain moves from being an unwanted, occasional guest intruding in one's life to being the driving force behind nearly all decisions. Daily choices are governed by the need to survive mentally, physically, and emotionally from day to day. Ordinary life can become almost unbearable.
